I haven’t always viewed personal finance the way I do today. Though sometimes we think of ourselves and our central philosophies as being static, when I stop to think about my philosophy towards my finances when I was in high school, through college, through my first job, until now, SO MUCH has changed.
And that’s how it probably should be since our experiences give us perspective and allow us to adapt our thinking. I always forget how much experiences might not always feel in the moment so directly related to changing a core belief.
When I was unemployed and looking for my first job out of college, I was so focused on the job search as something directly shaping the fundamental model of my career identity — I didn’t realize the bank account balance (or lack of a balance…) I carried while applying to jobs living in a slummy grad student summer sublet was simultaneously shaping my financial outlook.
